UN Voices Concern Over Israeli Herbicide Spraying Near Southern Lebanon

(MENAFN) The United Nations stated on Thursday that it has been made aware of reports indicating that Israel sprayed a herbicide in regions close to the Blue Line in southern Lebanon, sparking worries about possible long-term consequences.

"We are aware of reports that the substance dropped over areas near the Blue Line on 1 February is an herbicide," UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric remarked when addressing inquiries concerning the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Dujarric noted that "the use of herbicides raises questions about the effects on local agricultural lands and how this might impact the return of civilians to their homes and livelihoods in the long term."

He further reminded that "we remind the parties of their obligations under international humanitarian law and other possible legal frameworks."

The UN official also emphasized that "any activity by the IDF (Israeli forces) north of the Blue Line is a violation of resolution 1701."

"UNIFIL will continue to be in contact with the Lebanese authorities on this matter," he added, highlighting ongoing coordination with local officials.

Earlier on Monday, UNIFIL reported that the Israeli military had informed the organization of planned aerial operations to release what Israel referred to as a "non-toxic chemical substance" over regions near the Blue Line.

UNIFIL criticized the Israeli operation as "unacceptable," stating that it endangered the health of both its personnel and civilians while raising concerns about potential environmental impacts.
