Trump Announces Israel-Hezbollah Ceasefire Deal
Trump announced on his social media platform Truth Social that he had "a very productive call" with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, extracting a pledge that Tel Aviv would not deploy ground forces into the Lebanese capital Beirut.
"There will be no Troops going to Beirut, and any Troops that are on their way, have already been turned back," Trump said.
The US president revealed he had also communicated with Hezbollah through senior intermediaries, securing the group's commitment to stand down.
"Likewise, through highly placed Representatives, I had a very good call with Hezbollah, and they agreed that all shooting will stop — That Israel will not attack them, and they will not attack Israel," he added.
Trump separately said he urged Netanyahu during their call "not to go into a major raid" of Beirut, crediting the Israeli leader with reversing the deployment. "He turned his Troops around. Thank you Bibi!" Trump wrote in a follow-up post.
Without disclosing identities, Trump said he had spoken with representatives of Hezbollah's leadership, adding that both parties had agreed to a reciprocal cessation of fire — Israel standing down its strikes and Hezbollah halting attacks on Israeli soldiers and territory.
'Let's see how long that lasts'
Trump himself tempered expectations around the durability of the arrangement. "Let's see how long that lasts — Hopefully it will be for eternity!" he wrote, acknowledging the deal's fragility even as he touted its significance.
The announcement comes against a grim backdrop. Israel has continued its military campaign in Lebanon despite a ceasefire that came into force on April 17 and was extended for 45 days through US-mediated indirect negotiations. Israeli strikes since March 2 have killed more than 3,400 people across Lebanon, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry — underscoring the human toll of a conflict that multiple diplomatic efforts have so far failed to permanently extinguish.
