Hezbollah Agrees to US Plan to Halt Attacks with Israel

(MENAFN) Hezbollah has agreed to a US-backed proposal aimed at ending exchanges of attacks with Israel, according to a statement issued Monday by the Lebanese Embassy in Washington, marking a potentially significant step toward easing tensions along the border.

The embassy said Lebanese authorities received confirmation of Hezbollah’s acceptance of the proposal following discussions between Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Under the framework, Israeli strikes targeting Beirut’s southern suburbs would stop in return for Hezbollah suspending attacks against Israel. The arrangement would later be broadened to include a ceasefire covering all Lebanese territory, the statement added.

Fresh rounds of US-mediated negotiations involving Lebanese and Israeli representatives are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday as efforts continue to advance the agreement.

The announcement followed comments from US President Donald Trump, who said earlier Monday that Israel and Hezbollah had reached an understanding to stop attacking one another. Posting on Truth Social, Trump said he had held "a very productive call" with Benjamin Netanyahu and had been assured that Israeli forces would not enter Beirut.

Trump also stated that, through senior intermediaries, he had communicated with Hezbollah and obtained a commitment to end hostilities.

Despite a truce that took effect on April 17 and was later extended by 45 days after indirect US-brokered negotiations, Israeli military operations in Lebanon have continued.

According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, more than 3,400 people have been killed nationwide in attacks carried out since March 2.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently directed the expansion of military operations, with Israeli forces subsequently taking control of the strategically important Beaufort Castle.

The developments come as Iran continues to link a permanent agreement with the United States to an end to fighting across multiple fronts, including Lebanon.
