Gaza Medical Evacuations Resume as Rafah Crossing Reopens

(MENAFN) United Nations humanitarian officials confirmed Wednesday that medical evacuations for Gaza patients requiring treatment abroad are set to restart, following the reopening of a critical border crossing sealed for two days.

OCHA announced that the Rafah crossing, which connects Gaza to Egypt, has resumed limited operations in both directions after Israeli authorities lifted a two-day closure. Aid workers also extended assistance to displaced Palestinians returning into the Gaza Strip.

Separately, the Kerem Shalom/Karem Abu Salem crossing resumed cargo activity, allowing food and humanitarian supplies to enter the territory. Despite the resumption, OCHA cautioned that relief operations remain severely hampered — the crossing currently stands as the sole available cargo entry point into Gaza.

The World Food Programme disclosed that roughly 1.4 million Gazans received aid throughout last month, spanning food parcels, bread distributions, hot meals, and malnutrition treatment. An additional 500,000 individuals received cash assistance, the agency noted in a published update.

Separately, the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) reported that on Tuesday, several Palestinians — among them ambulance personnel from the Palestine Red Crescent Society — were detained by Palestinian armed elements operating alongside Israeli forces.

OHCHR issued a public call on platform X, pressing Israel to uphold civil order and safety across Gaza and to halt what it described as "such violations of international law, including the obstruction of medical services."

Violence in the West Bank shows no sign of abating. OCHA documented that since January 1 through this Monday, 57 Palestinians had been killed across the territory — among them 13 children and two women. Israeli forces were responsible for 41 of those deaths, while Israeli settlers carried out 13, and the remaining three were attributed to either Israeli forces or settlers.

The toll extends beyond casualties. OCHA has recorded upward of 980 settler-related incidents this year involving injuries or property destruction, spanning more than 230 communities — a rate of approximately six incidents every single day.

"The United Nations reiterates its call for the protection of civilians, including health-care workers, and full respect for international law," OCHA stated.
